Dissecting Cellulitis of the Scalp

Also known as:

“DCS,  Perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens,  and Hoffman disease”

Description:

DCS is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by pus-filled nodules on the scalp. Areas affected range from isolated areas to the whole scalp. Due to damage to the hair follicles, it is  often associated with patchy hair loss and scarring alopecia. It is often associated with other skin conditions such as acne, hidradenitis suppurativa, etc…

Nodules are often painful and/or uncomfortable. As the disease spreads it develops a network of sinus tracts. Bleeding and discharge of pus is a common occurrence.

Who is at risk:

Little is known about this rare disease and it only affects a small percentage of the population. Most cases commonly affects black males, onset usually occurs in the age range of 20 to 40 years old.  Other races, women, and children are also affected by this disease on a smaller scale. The cause remains unknown, however it is believed to be the result of blocked or ruptured hair follicles.
